Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)

UFMG is one of the leading institutions of higher education in Brazil, celebrating their 90th anniversary in 2017.  As a public institution ranked 11th in the Latin American region and 4th in Brazil in the RUF Ranking, UFMG counts over 60,000 students on four campuses, with 75 undergraduate courses, 78 graduate programmes at Master’s and PhD levels, and 68 continuing education courses, in all fields of knowledge.

In line with WUN’s priorities, UFMG excels in research in the areas of climate change, water resources, and environmental studies as well as in health, nutrition and biological sciences. In the humanities UFMG carries out research with a strong focus on language and social studies, including migration, heritage and indigenous development. UFMG strongly encourages both academic and extramural actions to enhance multicultural understanding and to foster social development.

UFMG hosts 8 out of the 12 National Institutes of Science and Technology (INCTs) located in the state of Minas Gerais, where state of the art research in the fields of animal husbandry, dengue fever, molecular medicine, mineral resources, water and biodiversity, nanotechnology, public security, vaccines, and web related research is carried out.

Among the 22 WUN members, UFMG has agreements with 10 WUN universities, among them a vibrant collaboration with the University of Southampton.
