We are delighted to announce that University of Tsukuba has joined the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN). We welcome President Kyosuke NAGATA and colleagues to the WUN Board, research teams, and programs.

University of Tsukuba was established in 1973 with an aim to enable an open and new system of education and research in Japan. A comprehensive, research-led university, University of Tsukuba has a rich history with three Nobel Prize laureates, and distinctive research expertise in fields such as digital science/AI, high-energy physics, particle and nuclear physics, and materials science. Tsukuba City, renowned as a Science City, and is designated as a Smart City in Japan, attracting leading researchers in urban engineering and robotics. More recently, the university has spearheaded pioneering research in life sciences, including studies on sleep and microbial communities, for example. The university provides an environment that allows future leaders to realize their potential in full, giving students the opportunity to develop their individuality and skills through education that is backed by cutting-edge research.

As WUN’s first member from Japan, University of Tsukuba adds valuable geographic and cultural diversity to the network. The university will serve as a useful gateway for WUN members to connect with universities and research institutes in Japan, as well as to its “Campus-in-Campus” network, which includes 14 universities in 12 countries, two of which are also WUN members.

President Nagata said, “It is a great honour and privilege to join the Worldwide Universities Network as the first Japanese university. We are proud to be a part of this distinguished network and are committed to contributing to its mission with dedication and enthusiasm.

Our global society is turbulent and full of complex issues, so what a single institution can do is quite limited. We are excited about the opportunities to work with fellow member institutions, to innovate, and to drive impactful change on a global scale. As we embark on this journey together, we look forward to the rich exchanges of knowledge and expertise that will undoubtedly emerge from our collaboration.”

WUN Executive Director Peter Lennie added, “The University of Tsukuba brings distinctive strengths to the network, complementing those of existing members, and enlarges opportunities for collaboration on the major global challenges that WUN is so well-placed to address. On behalf of WUN I’m delighted to welcome the university to the network.”
