The University of Alberta

The University of Alberta is one of Canada's most dynamic, internationally recognised post-secondary institutions.  It is a comprehensive institution, which boasts approximately 39,500 students enrolled in the close to 400 programs that are available.  The University of Alberta's dedication to research excellence is demonstrated by over $420 million CAD in sponsored research funding and its affiliations with world-class institutions.

Since its inception more than 100 years ago, the University of Alberta's vision has been to be one of the world's great universities for the public good.  This university is dedicated to the promise made by founding president Henry Marschall Tory that '...knowledge shall not be the concern of scholars alone.  The uplifting of the whole people shall be its final goal.'  This vision endures as the university strives to improve the lives of people in Alberta, across Canada, and around the world.

The University of Alberta joined the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) in Fall 2008 after receiving a formal invitation to become a member institution.  It is committed to taking full advantage of WUN by encouraging and supporting involvement in research collaboration, research mobility for faculty and graduate students, and the virtual seminar program.

There are a number of collaborative activities underway with the University of Alberta actively engaged in the four Global Challenges that have been initiated by the WUN. The University of Alberta's President Samarasekera assumed the Chair of the WUN Partnership Board in January 2012 but now acts as Vice-Chair since Dr. Max Price, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town assumed the Chair in April 2014.
