We are delighted to announce that Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) has joined the Worldwide Universities Network. We welcome President Professor Jaime Arturo Ramirez and his colleagues to the WUN Board, research teams and programs. The Worldwide Universities Network looks forward to a enthusiastic and productive partnership.

UFMG is one of the leading institutions of higher education in Brazil, celebrating their 90th anniversary in 2017.  As a public institution ranked 11th in the Latin American region and 4th in Brazil in the RUF Ranking, UFMG counts over 60,000 students on four campuses, with 75 undergraduate courses, 78 graduate programmes at Master’s and PhD levels, and 68 continuing education courses, in all fields of knowledge.

In line with WUN’s priorities, UFMG excels in research in the areas of climate change, water resources, and environmental studies as well as in health, nutrition and biological sciences. In the humanities UFMG carries out research with a strong focus on language and social studies, including migration, heritage and indigenous development. UFMG strongly encourages both academic and extramural actions to enhance multicultural understanding and to foster social development.

UFMG hosts 8 out of the 12 National Institutes of Science and Technology (INCTs) located in the state of Minas Gerais, where state of the art research in the fields of animal husbandry, dengue fever, molecular medicine, mineral resources, water and biodiversity, nanotechnology, public security, vaccines, and web related research is carried out.

The university has expressed interest in leading new international initiatives within WUN as a point of contact and dialogue in the interactions between WUN and other Latin America institutions of higher education. Among the 22 WUN members, UFMG already has agreements with 10 universities, among them a vibrant collaboration with the University of Southampton.

UFMG’s research and higher education interests align with WUN’s Global Challenges, bringing new and added strengths to the WUN partnership in terms of geography, culture, global reach and intellectual leadership. Their membership is expected to contribute to strengthening WUN in terms of global policy impact and the attraction of international resources.

We encourage WUN members to explore opportunities for collaboration directly with Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais counterparts. The contact details of the UFMG WUN Partnership Board and Academic Advisory Board members, and of the WUN Coordinator, will be published on the Governance page of this website.
