Alberta works with West African universities to foster next generation global scholars and leaders

The University of Alberta is partnering with three West African universities, including the University of Ghana, to mentor and build tomorrow’s diverse community leaders and global intellectuals through a new project.

Powered by a $300,000 grant from the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship (QES) Advanced Scholars West Africa program, the initiative supports research-focused exchanges for doctoral researchers, post-doctoral fellows and early career academics between the U of A and universities in Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal.

The project, On the Path of Social Responsibility and Global Leadership, will give the next generation of scholars the know-how to become effective leaders in their communities and beyond, said project lead Professor Philomina Okeke-Ihejirika of the U of A’s Faculty of Arts.

ICLHE 2021 Conference on Language and Higer Education in Maastricht: call for papers

On 19-21 October 2021, Maastricht University will be hosting the ICLHE 2021 Conference with the theme “EMI, ICLHE and Englishization: Reflecting on the changing university”.

York awarded to investigate the role food systems play in the health of children and the environment

The University of York has been awarded almost £6m to lead an innovative study which aims to create both healthier future generations and a healthier planet.

Researchers look at healthy eating interventions in schools and nurseries, food retailing, food procurement and farming to address issues such as childhood obesity, sustainability in agriculture and global warming.

The five-year research programme called 'Transformations to Regenerative Food Systems (TReFS) will also look at how regenerative farming, which promotes biosystems health, can help achieve both healthier populations and environment in the future.

Research Collaboration to Prevent Risks in Transport Infrastructures related to Climate Change

Developing and implementing a robust decision-making platform to anticipate, manage and mitigate natural risks in road and rail infrastructure networks of the Atlantic Area is a key objective of SIRMA, a €2 million pan-European research project.

SIRMA (Strengthening Infrastructure Risk Management in the Atlantic Area), which is scheduled to be completed in 2022, aims to significantly improve the resilience of such infrastructures, in particular in face of climate change impacts.

NCKU Receives 2020 National Sustainable Development Award

National Cheng Kung University received the 2020 National Sustainable Development Award on November 25th at an award ceremony in the Executive Yuan. Three schools were conferred this award in the education category, including National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), China Medical University, and Mingdao High School (Taichung). NCKU has demonstrated in recent years excellence in promoting the localization of sustainable development and its integration with daily living by substantively achieving the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through cross-disciplinary collaborations, NCKU was able to establish a campus sustainability consensus. NCKU leads the nation’s universities as being the first to champion the United Nation’s SDGs.

Registration Open for Early Career Researcher Networking Workshops

WUN, in collaboration with UNESCO and UNSDSN, is holding a series of free virtual networking workshops for early career researchers (ECRs) under the theme of ‘developing the next generation of research leaders for sustainable development’. The workshops will bring together early career researchers from all around the world interested in establishing connections to colleagues in their field.

Our first two workshops are now open for registration.  The first will cover SDG 13: Climate Action, with the second focused on SDG 4: Quality Education.  Although these networking workshops are principally for the benefit of WUN early career researchers, a limited number of places will also be available for middle and senior career researchers to further enhance networking opportunities for the ECRs.  Click through to learn more about each sessions, speakers, and to register.

Sheffield: Scientists and students publish blueprints for a cheaper single-molecule microscope

Their paper in Nature Communications provides labs with the build instructions and software needed to run the microscope.

A team of scientists and students from the University of Sheffield has designed and built a specialist microscope and shared the build instructions to help make this equipment available to many labs across the world.
